Gambia - 1990An interesting country where we visited a wildlife park (apart from monkeys, all the animals in the wild have been killed), a school and James Island in the Gambia River. James Island is where slaves were kept before transportation to the Americas. It is said that if a slave could swim to the mainland he was free; but the currents were strong so nobody, it is believed, actually made it. Venturing outside the hotel we were accosted by people begging for money and in the capital (Banjul) traders were persistent in trying to sell their wares. I did buy a coiple of music cassettes and a wooden mask.
